CV Tips
Do’s:- Be concise and specific, to the point with short sentences
- Tweak your resume according to each job description and specific selection criteria, use the same wording
- Highlight your past achievements and experiences
- Formatting: use standard fonts such as Arial, Courier or Times New Roman as not every program will be able to open all types of fonts
- No-brainer: do a spell check and re-read a couple of times
- Order of resume: Contact details/ Education & Qualifications/ Work history in reverse chronological order/ Skills/ Hobbies/ References
- Maximum of 3 pages
- Use white spaces to make your resume more legible
- Explain gaps in work history
- Include a short statement at the top of what you are (‘I am a specialist in...’) and what you are looking for (‘..and looking for a challenging role as a ‘xxx’ in the xxx industry’)
- Only submit your resumes to recruiters that are relevant to your skills and industry experience (it has happened that a company received the same CV from different agencies at different times which will raise questions to your employability)
Don't’s:
- Formatting: don’t use frames, tables or any weird fonts and don’t save as PDF (recruitment companies need to be able to easily transfer your resume into their database in order to match your skills and experience with (future) jobs)
- Don’t lie! A good recruiter will figure this out and otherwise it will hunt you down at some stage in your career (read more about this in ‘client section’)
- No pictures
- Don’t state your current salary details
- Don’t overstate your skills and experiences
